Alternators and Starters

San Diego Auto Shop

What generates most of the electricity in your vehicle is not the battery, but the alternator.

The alternator transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy. It sends power to essential parts of your vehicle like the headlights, the engine fan, ignition coils and various parts of the fuel injection system. It powers non-essential, but still very important parts like the radio and air conditioning system.

It’s important to have your alternator checked regularly because it’s not always readily apparent when it fails. It can fail in stages and even when it goes completely, your battery will take over for a short period of time.

That’s why it’s important to get an inspection of your electrical system. We are electrical systems experts. We will check your alternator, battery, ignition and starter.

The starter does the opposite of the alternator. It changes electrical energy into mechanical energy. The starter uses the electricity from the battery to start the crankshaft turn, and that gets your car going.

The electrical systems of today’s cars are complex. Your alternator, starter, ignition and battery are all crucial to your cars performance and, more importantly, its safety. More and more of today’s vehicles are being controlled by onboard computers. The electrical system is more important than ever...... Call San Diego Auto Shop

Antifreeze is actually half antifreeze, half water. And it does more than just keep things from freezing. It has anti-freeze, anti-boil and anti-corrosive properties. It flows through your radiator and engine and helps keep everything working at the right temperature

Cooling Fan

A cooling fan circulates air through the radiator so that it can release engine heat into the surrounding air. The fans can be mechanical or electric, if the cooling fan malfunctions, your engine can quickly overheat.

We will inspect your cooling fan and make sure the drive belt, or fan belt, that makes it turn, is not loose or cracked. He can also repair and replace damaged fans.

Pressure Cap

A pressure cap is sometimes, but not always, called the radiator cap. It may be on the radiator, or on the coolant reservoir.

A pressure cap should be inspected at least once a year. A cap that’s taken off while the engine is still hot could result in severe burns from the spray of boiling coolant.

Coolant Reservoir

The coolant reservoir indicates the level of coolant in the system. We can check this during every oil change.

The thermostat is a valve that regulates the flow of coolant based on coolant temperature. A poorly performing thermostat can result in overheating, engine knocking, poor fuel economy and more.

Fuel Pumps

Located in the fuel tank, the fuel pump, which nowadays is usually electric, simply pumps fuel from your gasoline tank to your engine. The pump creates pressure in the fuel lines that pushes the gasoline to the engine. Unused fuel is returned to the fuel tank. In most cars the fuel pump delivers a constant flow of gasoline to the engine. When the flow becomes less constant, your car starts acting sluggish or just stops acting altogether.

Fuel pumps can fail for a number of reasons. Most commonly because of contamination, overheating and over time, the gears in your fuel pump wear out.

Try not to run your car on a low gas tank. On most vehicles, 10-15 times the amount of fuel your fuel pump sends to your engine gets sent back to your tank. This help cools down your fuel. By running on a low tank, the fuel in your tank can overheat or even run dry.

Our expert technicians will fit your car with a name brand pump and send you off for as little money and time spent as possible. Saving you time and money is what we do. Making sure you get the right fuel pump for your car and getting it installed properly the first time are just two more reasons you don’t have to worry when you call Mobile Auto Repair.
